The sun seemed to shine a little brighter the next morning, when they woke up in Billy’s lounge. Tired and aching, the three of them sat in grinning silence over some bacon and beans that Billy had fried up. Even Odelia seemed slightly less surly.

They had done a good thing. In fact, that didn’t really cover it. They had done a great thing. A soul restored to Heaven – last night, they had done the work of angels.

In between spoonfuls of beans, Billy spoke to Eddie. “So, I now know the stikini’s story – she was banished from this realm by my grandfather, to the realm of spirit – they had tried to do what we did, but something went wrong. She was brought back by a name from legend. I still can’t believe it. If it’s true, then we have a bigger problem than the stikini.”

Eddie looked up from the last few beans in his bowl. “What do you mean, ‘bigger problem’?”

“If she was brought back by this medicine man – Sowapophe Uvehe – The Land that Moves Back and Forth – then he hasn’t died in 300 years… and some worse news for you: he’s the head of your old friends, the Alamosa Brujos.”

“Wait. The Land that Moves Back and Forth? What kind name is that?” asked Mathilda.

“It comes from the desert sand dunes,” said Billy. “His name – Sowapophe Uvehe – means Shifting Sands. His has been a cursed name amongst our people for generations.”

Eddie shook his head, as if clearing fog from it. Heavy scratches ran down his face and arms, and he was bandaged in parts. He healed quickly – way more quickly than he should – given the powers he had, but he wouldn’t look fine for another week. “Thanks, Billy. I think that name was the information we needed. But today, I just want to sit in the sun, feel it shine down on me. I want to take this win. Tomorrow, I’ll give you a call – maybe I’ll get Sko, a friend of mine, to join in. He thought there was more to this than what appeared at first, and I’ve learnt to listen to his hunches. But not today, okay? Today I’m tired, and I’m happy, and for once, I know we did some good. Let’s take it up tomorrow, okay?”

“Sure thing, Big Bear. More beans?”

Eddie grinned. “Obviously.”

Later, as Eddie, Mathilda, and Odelia drove home, the Ford raising a trail of dust on the dirt road behind them, Eddie put on some music.

As they turned onto the tarred road out of the park, the radio belted out the unmistakable sound of Norman Greenbaum’s “Spirit in the sky”. With two people and a howling bulldog singing along.
